Making a decision can be quite easy (e.g. ranch dip or blue cheese?) or difficult (e.g. career change). These are life decisions but as a leader how do you properly make the right decisions for your team/company when faced with a problem?

The steps to take in identifying how to make the best possible decision is;

1. Classify the problem. Simple or unique?

2. Define the problem. What exactly are we dealing with?

3. Specify the problem. What are the conditions (boundaries) you are working in that can help you get the right decision?

4. Decide what is “right,” rather than acceptable, in order to meet the boundary conditions.. Before compromises are made (within the boundaries) - will you be able to meet the specifics of your decision?

5. Build a decision with an 'action'. What commitment is needed from your organization to fulfill this?

6. Test the validity and effectiveness of the decision against the course of events. How are the decision being carried out?

Ultimately all events at a workplace require a 'generic' solution - Principle and Policy. The difference between the two?

A principle is something that has to be an objective where as a policy is set of 'rules' or guidelines. The 'rules' can be changed along the course of the decision but the principle must remain constant otherwise you didn't really make a decision now....did you....did you?
