When was the last time you learned something at your job? Something new that you believe will help you?

If you’re not learning something new then you’re not progressing but is it your fault or your leaders fault?

I’ll say the key person in this role would be the leader. Why would I say that?

The leader is in charge of moving that ship forward and if that leader is not growing the team then you are floating aimlessly.

Good leaders don’t wait for someone else to point out that they want to grow…they play an active role in development.

Now I speak directly to you….leaders...yes...you.

As a leader you should be looking into:

· Your observation of the person and their potential

· Your management style (feedback from the group)

· The persons ‘motivators’ i.e. money, awards

· How you can help this person directly through your own network, wisdom and overall feedback

This should not be done as a ‘one and done’ – this should be an ongoing process. I would recommend weekly.

You don’t have to fill up a massive amount of time doing it (15 minutes) but you definitely need to look at how you are both progressing to getting to that goal you set out ‘together.’

As time goes on you can re evaluate and take feedback from other team members on if they are seeing a progression. This is an extremely effective and (yes) easy way to get a true feeling of where your team is going as a group and individually.

Your biggest hurdle will be your own ego as you’ll notice the individuals will not only be challenging themselves….they will be challenging you. This…my leader….is a very GOOD thing so embrace it. Keep reaching to become a great leader not just a good one.
